Organic Red Vine from Bio-Gestion offers organically grown red vine leaves in a vegetable capsule to be taken once a day.

When we think of the vine, we think of grapes and wine. Red vine, though, is about the leaf: the one that, in autumn, gives the slopes of Lavaux and Valais their blazing colours. Herbalists have known it for a long time, and Mediterranean cuisine adopted it well before we did. We chose it organically grown and put it into a vegetable capsule: just one a day, and a bottle for two months. Here is what makes this leaf so special.

In autumn, some vines blaze red. It is their leaves, picked after the grape harvest and organically grown, that we have put into a vegetable capsule. Just one a day, and a bottle for two months.

Why the vine turns red in autumn

You only need to walk through Lavaux at the end of October to see it: the vineyard becomes a mosaic of reds and yellows. This is no coincidence. When the days grow shorter, the leaf stops producing its green chlorophyll, and other pigments take over.

In white grape varieties, it is mainly carotenoids that appear: the leaf turns yellow. In many red varieties, the leaf also produces anthocyanins, the same pigments that colour red wine, bilberries and red cabbage. It is these that give the vines their purple hues.

In autumn, the vines of Lavaux turn red and gold as the chlorophyll fades and reveals the natural pigments of the leaves.

The herbalists’ red vine

In herbalism, “red vine” does not mean just any vine. It refers to the leaves of so-called teinturier varieties, such as Alicante Bouschet: grapes whose skin, but also flesh and juice, are red. Their leaves turn red particularly early and intensely.

The leaves are generally picked in autumn, once the grape harvest is over, when they have taken on their colour. They naturally contain flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanins, compounds also found in many colourful fruits and vegetables.

Red vine leaves stand out for their natural richness in flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanins, which are particularly concentrated in autumn when the foliage takes on its purple hues.

A leaf you can also eat

The vine leaf is not just a matter for winegrowers. From Greece to Lebanon by way of Turkey, it is stuffed with rice and herbs to make dolmas, whose name comes from the Turkish dolmak, “to fill”. It is then picked young and tender, in spring.

In our capsules, it is the red autumn leaf that you will find, dried, with no other active ingredient.

Vine leaves also feature in Mediterranean cuisine, where they are stuffed with rice and herbs; Organic Red Vine uses the red autumn leaf.

The leaf, and nothing else

Each capsule contains 258 mg of organically grown red vine leaf, in a vegetable shell. Just one capsule a day is enough: a bottle of 60 capsules lasts two months.

Who is it for, and how to take it?

Organic Red Vine is intended for adults who wish to include red vine leaf in their daily routine, in an organic form that is easy to take.
