Over the years, portions often tend to get smaller, while the need for vitamins and minerals remains very much present. It is with this in mind that VitaSenior Green Complex was designed: one vitamin and two trace elements in significant amounts, combined in a single capsule to avoid taking several products.
Around this base, two ingredients of natural origin complete the formula: spirulina, the blue-green microalga that gives the product its colour and its name, and grape seed extract.
The vitamin C in VitaSenior does not come from synthesis, but from camu camu (Myrciaria dubia), a shrub that grows with its feet in the water along the rivers of the Peruvian Amazon. In the flood season, the banks are under water for months; this is when its small round berries ripen, turning from green to purplish red.
Their taste is so sour that they are almost never eaten as they are. Their reputation rests on something else: camu camu is among the richest known fruits in vitamin C. The powder used here is standardised to 50% vitamin C, which provides 30 mg per capsule, i.e. 37.5% of the nutrient reference value.
We hardly notice them, yet the body needs them every day. VitaSenior provides zinc and manganese as gluconates, forms commonly used in food supplements.
With about 7.5 mg of zinc (75% of the NRV) and 1 mg of manganese (50% of the NRV) per capsule, these are intakes that count, and that allow their recognised roles to be stated.
Spirulina is a microalga shaped like a tiny spiral, hence its name, which thrives in warm, alkaline lakes. It is one of the oldest forms of life on Earth, and humans have eaten it for centuries.
In the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors described the Aztecs harvesting a green mud from Lake Texcoco and shaping it into cakes: tecuitlatl. Thousands of kilometres away, on the shores of Lake Chad, Kanembu women have filtered it for generations and dried it in the sun to make dihé, sold at markets. It was only in the 1960s that European researchers “rediscovered” this alga and took an interest in its richness in protein, pigments and micronutrients.
What we usually spit out contains oligomeric proanthocyanidins, the well-known OPCs, polyphenols of the same family as those in red wine. Their story begins in Bordeaux: in the 1940s and 1950s, Professor Jacques Masquelier first isolated them from peanut skins, then from grape seeds, a raw material abundant in the region.
