Zinc and vitamin A (provided as beta-carotene) go hand in hand: both contribute to the maintenance of normal vision, and zinc contributes to normal metabolism of vitamin A. Vitamins C and E also form a pair: they contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, and vitamin C contributes to the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E. Lutein and zeaxanthin (from Indian marigold flower) and bilberry extract complete the composition.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids, the same family of pigments that gives carrots, peppers and autumn leaves their colour. They are found in green leafy vegetables, sweetcorn and egg yolk.
In humans, these two pigments are concentrated in a small area of the retina called the macula. Its full Latin name is telling: macula lutea, the “yellow spot”, a colouring it owes precisely to these carotenoids. The word “lutein” comes from the same Latin root, luteus: yellow.
Vista Plus provides 8 mg of lutein and 0.30 mg of zeaxanthin per daily dose.
The lutein in Vista Plus comes from a flower: Tagetes erecta, known as the African marigold, a misleading name, since it is actually native to Mexico.
Its large, deep orange flowers are one of the most concentrated plant sources of lutein. In Mexico, it is called cempasúchil: it is the flower of the dead, used to cover the altars on 2 November, and whose scent is believed to guide souls. In India, it is woven into the garlands that adorn temples and weddings.
A ceremonial flower, then, that has become a precious raw material.
The wild bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) grows in woodland undergrowth and at altitude, including in our Alps. Vista Plus contains a dry extract of its concentrated juice, which owes its blue-violet pigments, the anthocyanins, to the berry.
They carry the most direct claim of the formula. Vista Plus provides 5.3 mg of zinc (53% of the RDA) and 0.54 mg of vitamin A as beta-carotene (67.5% of the RDA).
They provide the formula’s second claim, and their amounts are generous: 54 mg of vitamin C (67.5% of the RDA) and 20 mg of vitamin E, i.e. 166.6% of the RDA.
Here is the most useful practical tip on this page, and it is given far too rarely. Lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and vitamin E are all fat-soluble: they dissolve in fat, not in water.
Taken on an empty stomach, they are absorbed much less well. So take your two capsules with a meal containing a little fat: a drizzle of olive oil on a salad, a few nuts, an avocado, some fish. It is the step that makes the biggest difference, and it costs nothing.
