European standard EN 149:2001+A1:2009 sorts filtering masks into three classes, FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3, according to their efficiency. It requires an FFP2 mask to achieve at least 94% filtration efficiency with limited leakage at the face. That is what sets it apart from a surgical mask, designed to hold back the wearer’s own droplets: the FFP2 is personal protective equipment, and it also protects the person wearing it. The CE marking attests that the mask meets these requirements.

How it works
The 5-layer filtering structure retains droplets, aerosols and airborne particles with a filtration efficiency of at least 94%. The adjustable nose clip and elastic bands hold the mask close to the face: inhaled air passes through the filter rather than around the sides, which also protects the wearer.

The FFP2 mask is personal protective equipment (PPE). It retains droplets, aerosols, splashes and other airborne particles.
The blue surgical mask is mainly designed to avoid infecting people nearby. It protects the wearer to a more limited extent, since it can be permeable to aerosols and let air through at the sides. The FFP2 mask, by contrast, follows the shape of the face and does not gape, so inhaled air passes through the filter.

Putting the mask on correctly
- Wash your hands before handling the mask.
- Place the mask over your nose and under your chin, then pull the elastic bands into place.
- Press the nose clip with both hands so it follows the bridge of your nose.
- Check the fit: when you breathe out, no air should escape at the edges. If it does, readjust the nose clip and the elastic bands.
A beard, even a few days’ growth, prevents the mask from fitting the face closely. Replace the mask when it is damp, dirty or damaged. Single-user mask: do not share it. Keep unused masks in their packaging, in a dry place.
