It is the main mineral in the formula, and the one its claims are based on. A daily dose of 3 capsules provides 221.6 mg of calcium, i.e. 28% of the reference intake, in the form of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate.
We instinctively associate calcium with bones and teeth, and rightly so. It is less well known that it is also involved in muscle contraction and in the transmission of nerve impulses.
CalMagTif also contains 40.5 mg of magnesium per daily dose, in the form of lactate, an organic salt derived from lactic acid that is generally well tolerated by the digestive system.
Not all forms of magnesium are equal: the oxide, widely used because it is cheap, is less well tolerated than organic forms such as lactate, citrate or bisglycinate.
Its Latin name, Melissa officinalis, comes from the Greek melissa: the bee. Foraging bees flock to it, and it was once rubbed on the inside of hives to keep the swarms in.
Grown in monastery gardens from the Middle Ages onwards, it gave rise in 1611 to the famous Carmelite lemon balm water, prepared by the friars of the rue de Vaugirard in Paris. And in our part of the world, it remains one of the most familiar evening herbal teas.
The bitter orange (Citrus aurantium), or Seville orange, reached Europe through the Arab gardens of Andalusia; its fruit is still used today to make the famous Seville marmalade.
It is a generous tree, every part of which has its use. Its flowers give neroli, named after a princess of Nerola who scented her gloves with it in the 17th century. Its zest gives bitter orange oil. And its leaves, the ones CalMagTif uses, give petitgrain, and have long been part of evening infusions.
The rose hip is the red fruit of the dog rose, the wild rose of our hedgerows (Rosa canina). French-speaking children know it by another, less elegant name: “gratte-cul”, literally “scratch-bottom”, because of the tiny hairs found among its seeds.
It has a fine history. During the Second World War, when citrus fruit could no longer reach Great Britain, the authorities organised the picking of rose hips from the country’s hedgerows to make a syrup for children. It is also eaten as jam and drunk as a herbal tea, particularly in German-speaking Switzerland and in Germany.
Brewer’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is the same micro-organism that makes bread rise and beer ferment. Long used as a food supplement, it naturally contains B-group vitamins, minerals and proteins.
