The 6 mistakes ruining your sleep… and how to fix them naturally

Seemingly harmless habits can sabotage your nights. Here are 6 common mistakes and natural solutions for getting back to deep, restorative sleep.

Quality sleep doesn't depend solely on how tired you are by the end of the day. It also reflects our lifestyle, our evening habits, our sleep environment, and our inner balance. If you wake up tired, struggle to fall asleep, or wake up in the middle of the night, certain common mistakes may be the cause. The good news is that there are concrete steps you can take to improve your sleep naturally.

Here are the six most common mistakes, and simple ways to fix them.

1. You look at screens right before bed

Phones, tablets, TVs, and computers are an integral part of our evenings. Yet the blue light emitted by these screens disrupts the natural production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. The result: it takes longer to fall asleep, and sleep quality can suffer.

To promote good sleep onset, it's recommended to switch off all screens at least an hour before bed. Replace this exposure with a calmer activity: reading, listening to soft music, journalling, or mindful breathing.

2. You eat dinner too late or too heavy

Eating a large meal right before sleep requires the body to spend its energy on digestion, instead of preparing for rest. Difficult digestion can cause you to wake up during the night or delay falling asleep.

The ideal is to have a light dinner, at least two hours before bed. Avoid fatty, sugary, or spicy foods, as well as alcohol. Opt instead for soup, cooked vegetables, or a small portion of lean protein. The goal is to help the body relax, not to put it to work.

3. Your bedroom is too warm or poorly ventilated

To fall asleep naturally, the body needs to lower its internal temperature slightly. If the bedroom is overheated or poorly ventilated, this can hinder sleep onset and cause restless sleep.

The ideal sleeping temperature is between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius. Remember to air out the bedroom for a few minutes before sleeping, use light sheets, and avoid overly thick duvets, even in winter.

4. You go to bed with your mind racing

Stress, mental rumination, or excess cognitive stimulation at the end of the day can make it hard to fall asleep. When the mind is still active, the body stays on alert, preventing the shift into rest mode.

Setting up an evening routine can help with this transition. This can include slow breathing exercises, some stretching, light reading, or writing down what you're grateful for. Certain plants, such as valerian, California poppy, passionflower, or lemon balm, are found in some food supplements.

5. Your bedtimes are irregular

Going to bed at very different times, especially on weekdays compared with weekends, can throw off the body clock. This disrupts the circadian rhythm, which regulates the natural sleep-wake cycles.

To restore restorative sleep, try to stick to regular bed and wake times, including on days off. By giving the body stable cues, you help it more easily kick off its sleep cycles.

6. You ignore signs of tiredness

Yawning, stinging eyes, feeling cold, or losing concentration are all signals the body sends to indicate it's time to sleep. Ignoring these signals and fighting off tiredness can make it harder to fall asleep later on.

Try to listen to these messages as soon as they appear. If you wait too long, a new wave of alertness can kick in, keeping you awake longer. Respecting your own rhythm is essential for natural, deep sleep.

Seemingly harmless habits can sabotage your nights. Here are 6 common mistakes and natural solutions for getting back to deep, restorative sleep.

In a nutshell

Good sleep isn't just a matter of luck: it's prepared for, respected, and cultivated. By correcting a few common mistakes and adopting habits that support relaxation, it's entirely possible to improve the quality of your nights. Because sleeping better simply means living better.
