Borage & Evening Primrose Oil 2 in 1 by Bio-Gestion combines two plant oils naturally rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), brought together in a single capsule.

There is a lot of talk about omega-3s, far less about their cousins, the omega-6s. Yet together with them, they form the large family of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and our body cannot make the two fatty acids from which they derive: it has to find them in food. Most omega-6s are easy to obtain, thanks to plant oils, nuts and seeds. One of them is the exception, and it is what makes these two oils so interesting.

Two flowers, two oils, one thing in common: gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA, an omega-6 almost never found in everyday food. Borage and evening primrose oils are its most concentrated plant sources, brought together here in a single capsule.

GLA, an omega-6 apart

Among the omega-6s, gamma-linolenic acid holds a special place. Our body can normally make it from linoleic acid, which is present in many oils. But this conversion is not always efficient and tends to slow down with age. And GLA is virtually absent from everyday food: it is found in significant quantities only in a few seed oils, including borage and evening primrose.

We explain all this in more detail in our article “Essential fatty acids: beyond omega-3”.

Borage, the blue star of the vegetable garden

Borage (Borago officinalis) is the hairy plant with intensely blue, star-shaped flowers that you come across in gardens and vegetable patches. Its flowers are edible: they have a light cucumber taste and are often used to decorate salads and summer drinks. Bees adore them.

An old Latin saying has it: “Ego borago, gaudia semper ago”, “I, borage, always bring joy”. It is its small black seeds that provide the richest known oil in GLA.

Borage (Borago officinalis), recognisable by its blue, star-shaped flowers much loved by bees, is one of the most concentrated plant sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

Evening primrose, the flower that opens at dusk

Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) behaves in a surprising way: its large pale yellow flowers open at nightfall, sometimes in just a few minutes, before the observer’s eyes. They then attract night-flying moths, such as hawk-moths, which pollinate them. Hence its English name: evening primrose.

Native to North America, it was brought to Europe at the beginning of the 17th century and has since settled along embankments and railway lines. Its tiny seeds give an oil slightly less rich in GLA than borage oil, but richer in linoleic acid.

Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) opens its yellow flowers at dusk, attracting hummingbird hawk-moths in particular, and its seeds provide an oil naturally rich in essential fatty acids, including GLA.

Two oils that complement each other

By combining the two, each capsule brings together the GLA richness of borage and the linoleic acid richness of evening primrose. One capsule provides about 75 mg of GLA and 275 mg of linoleic acid.

Borage and evening primrose oils naturally complement each other: one is particularly rich in GLA, the other in linoleic acid, brought together here in a single capsule.
